Players in the transport sector have called on the County Government of Nakuru to fast-track the construction of a new matatu terminus to improve their working conditions.
Led by Central Rift Matatu Owners Association Chairman, Stephen Muli the businessmen said the upcoming modern termini at the railway’s yard had taken longer to complete.
He argued that the delay was fuelling an extortion racket where County enforcement officers are said to be harrasing and receiving bribes from matatus plying undesignated zones.
“Our vehicles are being seized day and night and released with hefty fines. We will not allow this,” said Muli while accusing the County of what he termed as militarizing the enforcement unit.
He said his office had tried to reach Chief Officer for Public Service Training and Devolution, Paul Githinji to no avail. He said he will be reaching out to Governor Lee Kinyanjui on the same.
His sentiments were echoed by Nakuru Business Coalition Secretary, Simon Ole Nasieku who also accused Senator Susan Kihika of failing to champion for their business rights.
Mr Nasieku said the politicians had failed in coming up with friendly policies to see their businesses thrive, but instead turn to the businessmen for political mobilizations and votes.
The Friends of Devolution chairman, Benson Macharia said Counties should provide a good environment for business for all sectors, political affiliations notwithstanding.
When contacted, CO Githinji said urban planning was a function of the County government and that the Governor was committed to ensuring Nakuru City is habitable for all.
