A Langata police officer has allegedly shot and killed two women before turning the gun on himself in what appears to be a murder-suicide.

According to a police report filed at Langata Police Station, Corporal Mark Mulanda, call sign Lima 9, was on night duties at various locations including Cleanshelf, NHC, and Southlands area.

The report states that Mulanda had accompanied two other officers to Cleanshelf area before excusing himself to pick something from his house, which is about 500 meters away.

Gunshots were heard shortly after he left. The duty officer at Langata Police Station, Alice Wanjau, reported the sound of gunshots to the senior officers who rushed to the scene at Mugumoini Chief’s Camp.

Upon arriving, they found that Mulanda had shot two women, one of whom was his girlfriend, and then turned the gun on himself. The first victim was identified as Fiona Chepkoech, 37, the wife of Police Constable Enock Tirop. She was shot twice outside her house before Mulanda locked himself inside his own house where he shot his girlfriend, Rhoda Machuma Chepchumba, 28, seven times. Mulanda then shot himself in the neck.

The motive behind the shooting is not known at this time. The police have processed the scene, and the bodies have been taken to City Mortuary and Chiromo Funeral Home, respectively, awaiting autopsy.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the Langata community, and the Department of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Langata is currently investigating the incident.
