Governor Chepkwony orders mass COVID-19 testing for Kericho journalists

Kericho County reported its first local COVID-19 case on June 23 when the national tally stood at 4,952 infections. As of Thursday, Kenya’s caseload stood at 15,601 after testing 261,027 samples.

Kericho Governor Professor Paul Chepkwony has ordered all regional media houses to avail their employees for COVID-19 testing and sensitization.

This is after nine employees of the Radio Light and Life, a Christian radio station based in Kericho tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday.

In a statement, Head of Radio Mr Lyton Yegon indicated that the 9 staffers had been taken to the Kericho County Referral Hospital isolation and treatment facility.

“I have today directed that the management of the affected media house strictly adheres to the recommended guidelines on COVID-19 containment,” the Governor said in a statement.

He encouraged members of the public to use mobile phones and other online platforms to transact their business with the station to avert risk on infections.

However, Mr Yegon confirmed that the station would close down for two weeks to allow the staff to receive proper medical attention and to fumigate the premises.

Devolution Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter resigned his position as CS to venture into politics.

Keter becomes the first CS in the current cabinet to resign.

He wants to contest the Kericho Gubernatorial seat.

“I have today tendered my resignation letter to his Excellency Hon.Uhuru Kenyatta, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander in Chief of the Kenya Defense Forces” he stated.

Keter added that he is doing sobo comply with circular that was also issued by Head of Public Service on January 28, 2022 requiring all state and public officers who are not exempted  by the provisions of the Elections Act 2011 from resigning from their offices on or before today, Tuesday 8th of February 2022.

A Kericho-based media house has closed down following a COVID-19 pandemic scare.

The Radio Light and Life this evening arrived at the decision after 9 journalists tested positive for COVID-19.

Head of Radio Mr Lynton Yegon said the staffers have been isolated at a Kericho hospital and contact tracing was underway.

“The station closes for two weeks to allow our staff to receive proper medical attention and to fumigate our premises,” he said.

Mr Yegon stated that the Media Council of Kenya and Kericho County’s Department of Health had been consulted on the move.

He appealed to their listeners to remain calm and to pray for the affected staff members.

He added that listeners will be updated on new developments through social media pages.

This comes days after Jeff Koinange and Stephen Letoo of Royal Media Services tested positive for COVID-19.

Media houses across the country have opted to have their workforce tested owing to the high risk of exposure in the line of duty.
