The government has launched investigations into today’s deadly conflict between two politically opposing groups at Kenol in Murang’a County earlier today.

Youths allied to Jubilee Party’s Tangatanga and Kieleweke factions fought ahead of a church fundraiser in which Deputy President William Ruto was expected to officiate.

The Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai has formed a team consisting of the Director of Internal Affairs Unit and two senior officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to investigate the incident where two people lost their lives.

A woman identified as Ms Mercy Wangui who was cornered by the residents and beaten to near-death told Inooro TV they had been hired and paid Sh1,000 each by a local politician to disrupt DP Ruto’s meeting.

It was expected to be a defining moment for DP Ruto’s support base in Mount Kenya region, where he has been accused of wrestling it from his boss, President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The DP later at Githurai on his way to Nairobi condemned the violence, saying it was brought about by ‘people who do not want to see him change the lives of Kenyans’.

“We urge politicians to desist from engaging in inciteful utterances and acts. Stern action will be taken against any person engaging in planning and executing unlawful acts,” said IG Mutyambai in a statement to newsrooms.

He reiterated that the National Police Service remains committed to working within the law in discharging its mandate, which includes and not limited to the protection of life and property.
