Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Nakuru Branch has raised concerns over what they term as continued attacks on teaching fraternity by the political class.

The officials were responding to recent remarks by Nakuru Town West MP Samuel Arama that a section of day schools heads was charging parents extra unnecessary costs and sending learners out of school, interfering with the 100 per cent transition policy.

Addressing journalists in Nakuru Town today, the unionists led by Executive Secretary Duncan Gitau called on the MP to keep off education matters and maintained that KUPPET will not relent in protecting the teachers.

“We have a mandate as a labour union to protect the teachers. We will not entertain a legislator who attacks school heads under the guise of the National Government Constituencies Development Funds absorption,” said Gitau.

Ms Everlyn Chepchumba and Ms Anne Langat from KUPPET also called for gender equality and respect for the female teachers and that the political class should treat them with dignity.

However, in a quick rejoinder, Nakuru Town West MP Samuel Arama called out teachers charging parents extra money, especially on day schools adding that it is against the law.

“I will be convening a meeting with all education stakeholders and parents to iron out the issues affecting schools my constituency,” he promised urging KUPPET officials to stay calm.
