Locals protest alleged public land grabbing in Kampi Ya Moto

The locals alleged that the grabber has been using influential people in the government to fight justice and harass local administrators, some of whom have been transferred from the area.

Residents of Kampi Ya Moto in Rongai sub-County have called on the government to expedite the recovery of a 26-acre parcel of public land, allegedly grabbed by a private developer.

Locals say the land had been set aside for public utilities but delayed development of the earmarked infrastructures saw the accused investor fence it off as part of his land.

Now, the developer has fenced the prime parcel of land and ploughed a major access road awaiting heavy rains for planting claiming the government had sold it to him.

Locals have disputed the alleged sale of the land which according to them was set aside for a school, market, cattle dip, social hall and offices for national government administrators.

“There has never been a meeting for public participation to approve the change of use for the land. This is utter disrespect to us and the future generations who shall have no space for public utilities,” stated Eric Kimani, a local leader.

They now want the government to survey the area to determine the boundary between a land parcel LR No. 10978/14, which is said to be public land, and the land parcels Nakuru/Kampi Ya Moto/6 and 3.

The locals alleged that the grabber has been using influential people in the government to fight justice and harass local administrators, some of whom have been transferred from the area.

Nakuru County National Lands Commission Secretary, Frank Kibelakenya said his office has forwarded the matter to the Directorate of Settlement Schemes for action.

Muslim leaders are calling on government to address the street families menace.

The say this is the time the government should start more schools and accommodate them to better their lives.

Led by Ustadh Muhammad, the leaders also urged the government to help boost organizations working to defend the rights of children in the country.

They added that this will help reduce crime in Nakuru city and other towns.

“Children are innocent and we urge the government to ensure those on the streets are assisted” said Ustadh Muhammad.

They spoke on Tuesday at Salgaa Mosque even as the world marked street Children Day.

Jubilee party Nakuru branch has apologized for the chaos witnessed at the party offices in Nakuru earlier this week.

Speaking during a sensitisation meeting in Rongai constituency, Njuguna Gichamu, one of the mobilization coordinators said that jubilee is the party to beat in the next election and that is why people are fighting to be in it.

Gichamu said, “even as we regret the altercations, the party is a darling to many and we encourage many to vie through it.”

Similar sentiments echoed by Dr Stanley Karanja who is vying for governor seat in Nakuru.

Karanja stated, “It is so unfortunate that such happened but we are very remoseful and we urge our political leaders to maintain peaceful campaigns.”

This is the the 4th  subcounty the Jubilee party is doing sensitisation meetings after Nakuru west, Naivasha and Njoro.

The party intends to do similar meetings in all the sub counties before party primaries.

Internally Displaced Persons of the 2007/2008 post-election violence in Giwa, Visoi Ward of Rongai Sub County in Nakuru have a reason to smile after the county government handed them title deeds.

They are the beneficiaries of Nakuru titling program after suffering for the last 15 years.

With the title deeds, the residents of Giwa settlement scheme in Visoi, Rongai Sub County are now rightful owners of the land and are no longer IDPs.

Speaking during the event, Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui said with the document, they can confidently develop their land and even use it to acquire funding to invest.

He warned them against selling their parcels of land saying such a move was uncalled for.

“We urge beneficiaries not to rush to sell as there are major developments including road upgrade, avocado factory that will increase value of land and offer opportunities for rentals and other businesses”  said Kinyanjui.

The county government has vowed to issue more title deeds to all the IDPs in Nakuru county in the next 6 months.

Besides, the county government of Nakuru will also issue 29 market centers across the county with titles in an effort to secure public utilities.

So far,  70,000 title deeds have been issued under the program as one way of addressing historical land question.
