In what appears as a move to clean up the graft-riddled Kenya Medical Supply Agency, President Uhuru Kenyatta has overhauled the entire KEMSA Board.

According to a gazette notice dated April 28, the change of hands will take effect on April 30 and will result in the revocation of James Kembi Gitura’s appointment as the board’s chairperson.

Mary Chao Mwadime replaces Senator Gitura, who was moved to Communications Authority on March 17, even after being fingered in the alleged KEMSA dubious tender deals amounting to Sh7.8 billion.

Minister for Health Mutahi Kagwe has also appointed new members to the board; Lawrence Wahome, Robert Nyarango, Terry Kiunge Ramadhani, and Linton Nyaga Kinyua to serve for 3 years,

The appointment of Timothy Mwololo Waema, Dorothy Atieno, Bibiana K. Njue, and Joel Onsare Gesuka has been revoked by the Minister with immediate effect.

The changes come just days after the United States Secretary of State, Anthony J Blanken said corruption at KEMSA was to blame for the ARV drugs standoff between Kenya and USAID.

The incoming KEMSA Board boss, Mary Chao Mwadime previously worked in Liberia as USAID’s Officer in charge of Acquisition and Assistance.

Carrefour, owned and operated by Majid Al Futtaim in Kenya, has opened another store at the Garden City Mall — its second on the bustling Nairobi-Thika highway.

The new store, which is open to the public now, will operate as a Carrefour Market, with a focus on stocking a wide range of food items and selected non-food items alongside small electrical appliances.

The new outlet gives customers living close to the mall access to its WhatsApp ordering service, allowing them to shop online and have their products delivered directly to their door.

In a further move to provide exceptional value and create tech-driven experiences for customers, Carrefour’s Click and Collect service — also accessed via WhatsApp — will be available from the new Garden City Mall location.

Through Click and Collect, customers gain the flexibility and convenience of shopping online and deciding when to collect their order at a time that suits their schedule.

Commenting on the new opening, Franck Moreau, Country Manager of Carrefour Kenya at Majid Al Futtaim Retail said: “We are constantly looking at ways to enhance the customer experience and bring Carrefour value to more in the community. We also know that with busy schedules, customers seek convenience now more than ever before. That’s precisely what we offer with the opening of our new Garden City Mall location — a community store at the heart of it all where customer can get all the essentials, effortlessly.”

Supporting the prosperity of the community, the Garden City Mall store will create both direct and indirect job opportunities for Kenyans by employing 100 people.

Additionally, in a boost to economic growth, the store presents new opportunities for local suppliers, producers, and farmers to forge partnerships and be part of Carrefour’s supply chain.

The government has suspended passenger flights between Kenya and India citing COVID-19 cases and the “double mutant” virus in the Asian country.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the suspension will take effect from Saturday midnight for the next 14 days, pending review by the government.

All passengers arriving from India will be subjected to rapid antigen testing upon arrival and at the port of entry and observe a 14 day quarantine period.

“Those who test positive will be put into mandatory quarantine in specified areas at their own cost,” he said at Moi County Referral Hospital in Voi, Taita Taveta County.

However, cargo flights from India will remain in operation subject to the laid down guidelines under the laid down transport protocols. India is one of Kenya’s main trading partners.

The CS advised Kenyans planning to seek treatment in India to work for alternatives following the health crisis in India as the Kenyan government has improved local health services considerably.

“India’s capacity is overwhelmed. People cannot even get to the hospital for treatment. It is baffling for a Kenyan to get into a flight to head to India for treatment,” he said.

The second wave of infections has seen at least 300,000 people test positive and over 3,000 deaths each day for the past week, overwhelming Indian health facilities and crematoriums.
