With less than 5 months to the August polls, The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has entered a Memorandum of Understanding with Kenya Editors’ Guild and Kenya Union of Journalists.
This is meant to enhance factual reporting on electoral processes which permits democracy to grow in Kenya.
The MoU signed on Friday at a meeting held in Nakuru entails capacity building, Enhancing delivery of factual, credible and verifiable information to the public.
It also has to do with promoting access to electoral activities including tallying centres and polling stations, providing resource persons who n Electoral laws, processes and activities to inform the public.
IEBC will also provide a portal for the media to access election results in ret time to enhance transparency, accountability and prevent disinformation and misinformation.
Speaking during the signing of the MoU, IEBC’s chairperson Wafula Chebukati stated, “the media has chosen to the right route of being an ally of IEBC, however they will retain their independence to manage the electoral information given to them and consult whenever there is something not clear.”
IEBC also underscored the need to provide media access to all polling stations so that they may report the results announced at the constituency, county and national tallying centre.
Vice Chair Juliana Cherera on her part reterated the importance of partners specifically the media in providing a platform that empowers the Commission to deliver it’s constitutional mandate.
“In this game, IEBC is the referee, Political parties are the players and the office of registrar of political parties is the coach. Similarly, the media is the voice, IEBC is the content.Therefore, this partnership will make the voice have the right content,” said Cherera.
