A humanitarian foundation in Njoro sub-County has embarked on an environmental conservation program to foster peace and cohesion in the region.

In the recent past, the region has experienced a wave of violence pitting communities living in Nakuru and Narok counties leaving several dead.

Administrators have attributed cattle rustling and fight for pasture as a lead factor in the flareups that has also led to the destruction of Logoman Forest, a block of Mau Complex.

To this effect, the Kamau Kuria Cares Foundation is planting trees as well as setting up tree nurseries in all schools in the region to mitigate climate change effects.

Already several primary schools; Kaptich and Siryat in Mauche Ward, Matumburu in Kihingo Ward and Kariaini in Lare Ward have each had over 100 trees planted.

The foundation’s Patron Mr Kamau Kuria said there is a need to involve every ethnic group in community poverty eradication engagements such as environmental conservation.

Sustainable Development Goals No 16 calls for the promotion of peace and inclusivity of societies for sustainable development. Mr Kuria said he would establish livestock markets to foster peace.

“We are in the forefront in promoting peace for social, political and economic development as enshrined in the Constitution,” Mr Kuria who is also a director at Geothermal Development Company stated.

The foundation aims to plant a minimum of 2,000 trees annually in Njoro sub-County. The trees are purchased from nurseries ran by local youths hence promoting local economies.
