Environmentalists mount pressure on Governor Kinyanjui over delayed opening of newly refurbished Nyayo Gardens Park

Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui is on receiving end over delayed opening of the newly refurbished Nyayo Gardens Park.

Environmental activists in Nakuru led by James Wakibia have questioned why the park is yet to be opened to the public 3 years after completion of the refurbishment.

“It’s a shame that the public recreational garden has taken almost three years for minor rehabilitation works to conclude. Even now, the public is still in the dark as to when the Nakuru Nyayo garden is to be open. I have tried asking those responsible but their are tight lipped, nobody wants to say when it will be opened” stated Wakibia.

The anti-plastic bags campaign champion added that delays in opening of the facility has made it impossible for public to have a rest in the premise as it is fenced off.

According to Wakibia, with matatu stages being kilometres away from Nakuru CBD locals have no space to rest since the only places they could take a breather are hotels where they would be forced to buy something.

They are now calling on Governor Lee Kinyanjui to move with speed and open the facility, failure to which they will hold peaceful demonstration on the same.

“The garden should be open without further delay failure we shall exercise our power as citizens to open it up, nothing will stop us from exercising power bestowed on us by the constitution of Kenya” said Wakibia.

They added that the garden is nobody private property to warrant such abnormal delays in opening it up.

While comparing with the Nairobi express way which started being build last year but is almost complete, the old railway line rehabilitation that  almost done, Wakibia wondered why a 2 acre garden would take 3 years to complete.

“Every public project needs to have completion date but this one does not have, they would want to use it for political mileage but that’s nonsense, residents want a place to relax, I want a place I can seat and enjoy fresh air, and it should be opened as soon as possible, failure, we the people, shall open it up” he said.

Sentiments echoed by online guru Elijah Kinyanjui.

Kinyanjui stated that would team up with Wakibia and like-minded to ensure the facility is opened to the public.

Nakuru Town West MP Samuel Arama has told off Deputy President William Ruto over the bottom-up model.

Speaking in Nakuru West, Arama said the Deputy President is not genuine with Kenyans who are going through harsh economic times.

He said it was hypocritical for DP to go around the country purporting that he will transform the lives of Kenyans if elected President.

The second term serving Legislator argued that DP Ruto has been in government and that if he has not been able to transform the lives of Kenyans then he cannot purpot that he will do so in future.

“The Deputy President should be genuine with Kenyans.He has been in government and if he has not delivered, then how can he claim that he will do so in future” said Arama.

The vocal Nakuru Legislator also took issue with MPs allied to Ruto’s UDA party.

He said the Legislators who claim to have ditched Jubilee party for UDA have lost focus on development and are now busy on campaigns moving from one county to another.

Arama challenged them to start focusing on transforming the lives of their constituents first before engaging in 2022 politics.

“There are these group of MPs who every weekend they are with DP.I think it’s high time they start focusing on development in their constituencies instead of moving around aimlessly” he said.

Stanbic Nakuru City Marathon will be held annually in Nakuru.

This was revealed on Sunday as the first one of its kind was held in Nakuru.

The cold Sunday morning was an added advantage for the participants in the race that kicked off at the Stanbic Nakuru branch, Kenyatta Avenue.

With over 3,000 participants taking  part in,  Daniel Simiyu (male category) and Catherine Reline (female category) emerged winners in the 21km category.

Cornelius Kemboi (male category) and Daisy Jepkemei (female category) also took lead in the 10km category.

The event also attracted elite athletes including World Marathon record holder Brigid Kosgei and 1,500m Olympic World Champion and Boston Marathon Champion Geoffrey Kipkorir Kirui.

Speaking when he graced the event, Nakuru County Governor, H.E. Lee Kinyanjui congratulated the winners for shining in the first time event in Nakuru.

He said such is a great move towards nurturing talents.

“I am proud to be here today to launch this marathon. I am an advocate for promoting and nurturing young talent and I believe we have witnessed future world record runners here today. I wish to commend the winners of the marathon races” said Kinyanjui.

The event was made possible through Stanbic Bank’s investment of Ksh10million.

 

“I would like to congratulate the winners of all the races here today. You are a true embodiment of tenacity and have demonstrated what it takes to set your mind on a target, persevere and follow your dreams” said Stanbic Bank’s Chief Executive Charles Mudiwa.

Cases of depression among police officers in Nakuru county will be a thing of past following an initiative by Nakuru county Police Commander Beatrice Kiraguri.
The county Police Boss is on a mission to aid police officers on matters mental health.
She is doing this through organized soccer tournaments as well as well being sessions.
Under the soccer tournament, the Junior officers have been able to play and interact with their seniors.
“This is a good move to ensure good relationship between the juniors and seniors in the service” she said.
According to Kiraguri, the soccer tournament is key in relieving pressure and stress among Officers.
The police officers have also been able to play friendly matches with Bodaboda operators as a way of ensuring good police-public relationship.
It should be noted that mental health has been a subject of discussion in the Kenya police service, with cases of murder, suicide and violence committed by some members of the Police Service on the rise.
Besides the soccer tournament, Kiraguri has also partnered with other stakeholders to organize well-being sessions for Nakuru officers.
The recent one was on Saturday November 27 this year at the Nakuru Agricultural Show ground.
During the session, officers engaged in dances before listening to talks from various experts among them doctors, psychologists and counsellors.
Speaking after the event, Riftvalley Regional Police Commander Fredrick Ochieng lauded the move.
“This is a good initiative to just help our officers be able to handle pressure and stress that comes with their job” he said.
Similar sentiments echoed by Nakuru county Police Commander Beatrice Kiraguri who stated that such initiatives are key in addressing challenges that police officers go through.
While noting that officers too are human, Kiraguri called on all other county Police Commanders to emulate the same.
“Police officers are also human and they go through stressful moments and that is why I am doing this in my own small way.I hope all the other county commanders will follow suit” said Kiraguri.
